Facebook Introduces New App for Non-FB Users

But it's only for Android devices and isn't available in the U.S.

If you’re one of those people who doesn’t use Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), even though all your friends and family do … well, the social media giant has an app for you.

The company has released an app for mobile devices running Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android operating system that allows people who don’t have Facebook accounts to participate in conversations among Facebook users, USA Today notes.

Facebook said the app would allow users to communicate with anyone on their contacts list, regardless of whether they have Facebook accounts.  The app doesn’t currently feature advertisements.

However, for now Facebook’s Messenger for Android is available only in India, Indonesia, Australia, Venezuela and South Africa. While the company plans to offer the app to U.S. users eventually, it did not specified a roll-out date for North America.

A version of Messenger will also be released for Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS devices at a future date. Reports surfaced last month that Facebook is encouraging its employees to adopt Android-based devices over iPhones.

Shares of Facebook rose more than 1% in Tuesday morning trading.
