Pope Posts First Tweet, Hits 1 Million Followers

Benedict XVI sent blessings via Twitter on Wednesday

Pope Benedict XVI sent his first official tweet Wednesday.

The pope sent the tweet after his general audience at the Vatican. It read, “Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart,” The Associated Press reports.

Benedict followed up his initial tweet by responding to a question about how to be faithful in daily life. “By speaking with Jesus in prayer, listening to what he tells you in the Gospel and looking for him in those in need,” was his reply.

The pope’s Twitter account is @pontifex. Response to the news that the pope would begin tweeting with his own account spurred great interest around the world. At the time that the pope sent the tweet, he already had more than 1 million followers.

The 85-year-old pontiff does not type the tweets himself. An assistant types them and he just taps the “send” button.  He has previously tweeted via the Vatican’s account.
