RIM Promises Over 70K BlackBerry 10 Apps at Launch

The company's future is riding on the new operating system

blackberry rimm phones 630Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) is moving closer to the all-important launch of its new BlackBerry 10 operating system and is promising customers that the new OS will arrive with plenty of apps.

The struggling smartphone-maker says it will have about 70,000 apps ready for BlackBerry 10 by the time it launches in January, but that’s down from earlier estimates of about 100,000 apps, Mobile Magazine notes.

Among the apps that will be ready for the BlackBerry 10 launch are those from social media giants Twitter and Facebook (NASDAQ:FB).

Though it was once the dominant smartphone developer, RIM saw its markets share collapse under fierce competition from Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone and smartphones running Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android operating system.

The company has bet heavily that an updated BlackBerry 10 interface and new line of smartphones will recapture lost market share.

In addition to the iPhone and Android smartphones, BlackBerry 10 will face competition from devices running Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) new Windows 8 operating system.

Shares of RIM slipped fractionally in Wednesday morning trading.
