Subaru Recalls 630K Vehicles for Fire Risk

Underside door lights could short-circuit after water exposure

Auto Cars TransportationSubaru, a division of Fuji Heavy Industries (PINK:FUJHY), has issued a recall of 630,000 vehicles over defective door lighting that could potentially cause fires.

Mounted on the underside of doors, the “puddle lights” are designed to cast a glow on the ground, aiding occupants as they get in and out of vehicles in the dark. However, exposure to moisture, particularly water containing road-salts, can cause the lights to short circuit, possibly melting plastic housings and producing smoke or fine, CNN Money notes.

While the company is recalling a large number of vehicles, it estimates that just 54,000 will actually require repairs, which will be made by Subaru dealers at no cost to owners.

Among the vehicles included in the recall are Subaru Forester SUVs made between 2009 and 2012, as well as 2010 and 2011 Outback wagons, Tribeca SUVs manufactured between 2006 and 2012, and Legacy sedans from the 2010 and 2011 model years.

In November, rival Japanese auto giant Toyota (NYSE:TM) recalled 1.52 million vehicles sold in Japan and 1.25 million sold overseas due to defective steering systems and water pumps.

Shares of Fuji Heavy Industries slipped fractionally in over-the-counter Thursday midday trading.
