Upgraded Dish Hopper Will Send Shows to Your iPad

[1]Dish Network (NASDAQ:DISH[2]) has debuted a set top box that will allow subscribers to watch their recorded TV shows and movies[3] on their Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL[4]) iPads.

Introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Monday, the new digital video recording device — an upgraded version of Dish’s controversial Hopper set top box — permits users to transfer previously recorded content to their iPads. The transfer can only be done via a WiFi connection using the same Internet router connected to the Hopper box, the Associated Press noted.

While transfers can only be done in a subscriber’s home, once recorded video has been transferred to an iPad, it can be watched at any time and in any location. The new Hopper box is expected to reach consumers later this year.

Additionally, the new Hopper box can transmit live television content to iPhones, iPads and mobile devices running Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG[5]) Android operating system over the Internet, even when the subscriber is outside the home, using technology from Sling Media.

Broadcasters had already expressed dismay at earlier versions of the Hopper set top box, which allowed users to omit advertisements from TV shows. A number of media companies, including Comcast’s (NASDAQ:CMCSA[6]) NBCUniversal and News Corp.’s (NASDAQ:NWSA[7]) Fox are pursuing litigation over the ad-skipping technology[8].

Despite the debut of the new Hopper box, shares of Dish Network sank more than 1% in Tuesday morning trading.
