38,000 Pounds of Sausage Recalled

Plastic may be mixed in the meat

The Smithfield Packing Company — a Smithfield Foods (NYSE:SFD) subsidiary — is recalling 38,000 pounds of pork sausage due to possible contamination.

The company is concerned that its products might contain small bits of plastic — possibly from gloves — and might harm consumers. No injuries have been reported from the possible contamination but the company did receive two complaints.

The USDA issued the recall yesterday. The sausage products were distributed in Alabama, Washington, D.C., Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas. The packages subject to recall include:

  • Gwaltney mild pork sausage roll — one pound chubs. Use by date of Mar. 12, 2013
  • Gwaltney milk pork sausage roll — Cases marked with “Case Number 78533109741″

Both can also be identified by looking inside the USDA Mark of Inspection. If it reads “Est. 221-A” it should be returned.
