Amazon Is Back Online After Major Outage

The website was down for almost an hour yesterday

Online shoppers found themselves unable to access Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) homepage for almost an hour on Thursday afternoon.

The Internet retailer began experiencing trouble with its main website around 2:32 p.m. It remained inaccessible for about 50 minutes. Amazon’s large-scale server capacity makes website crashes an unusual event for the e-commerce giant, CNNMoney noted.

In fact, Amazon uses some of its spare server capacity to maintain a web-hosting business, Amazon Web Services, which didn’t experience any difficulties while Amazon’s main page was down.

Other Amazon properties like the Internet Movie Database (IMDB) and shoe-retailer Zappos also had no problems. The company’s mobile app also continued to function normally during the outage.

No reason has yet been given for the outage. However, unnamed sources told Gizmodo that it wasn’t the result of a cyberattack.

Shares of Amazon slipped fractionally in Friday morning trading.
