Buyer Beware: Russian Meteor Fragments Likely Fake

Most pieces sold are false, experts say

Most pieces of the meteor that exploded over Chelabinck, Russia that are for sale are fake, experts say.

Immediately following the explosion over the Russian town pieces began showing up for sale online, reports The Global Times. Most of them are fake and Russian scientists say they have found only 50 actual fragments.

The doesn’t stop the online hucksters. Pieces are being auctioned and sold online in China and in the American-based eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY). Sellers are claiming that the fragments have mystical powers and can heal the sick and bring good luck.

Astronomers view any claims of special powers with mockery. They also are skeptical about the pieces being sold online. The curator of the Beijing Planetarium says, “The majority of the meteorites sold on Taobao are fake, and the buyers should be very careful.”
