The Happiest, Saddest States According to Twitter

Team analyzed 10 million tweets

A new study of people’s tweeting habits has determined the happiest and saddest states in America.

The study – performed by the Vermont Complex Systems Center – analyzed 10 million tweets, reports Business Insider. The tweets were studied for keywords that indicated either happiness or sadness. They admit it’s an inexact science but believe it provides some indication of regional happiness levels.

The American south rated the saddest region while the west and New England were the happiest. The happiest city was Napa, Calif. and Beaumont, Tex. was the saddest.

Here’s a list of the top five happiest states:

  1. Hawaii
  2. Maine
  3. Nevada
  4. Utah
  5. Vermont

And here’s the saddest:

  1. Louisiana
  2. Mississippi
  3. Maryland
  4. Delaware
  5. Georgia

The full list of happy and sad states, and how they were determined, can be read in the original study.
