Watch Out, Pandora! Slacker Radio is Relaunching

Human disc jockeys set the station apart

Music service Slacker Radio is relaunching itself in an attempt to challenge Pandora (NYSE:P).

Unlike Pandora and other online music services, Slacker radio is using humans to create its playlists, reports Forbes. The use of “expert curated” stations to present music instead of letting software select playlists is a key feature of the relaunched service. Slacker already has more than 200 stations operating.

It’s available on iOS, Android and Blackberry systems (and the web) and will have more songs available than either Pandora or rival Spotify. In a release for the relaunch, the company said that it will have more than 13 million songs available for its listeners, while also featuring news and talk channels for those interested.

Slacker clearly has a lot of ground to make up with the relaunch. Pandora currently has 65 million users and Spotify boasts of 29 million. Meanwhile, Slacker has just 2 million, with only one-quarter of those being paid subscribers.
