video games[1]One fan of the popular Nintendo (PINK:NTDOY[2]) video game The Legend of Zelda has taken it upon herself to address what she perceives as a glaring flaw in the game[3].

In the game’s official release, players cannot play as the eponymous Zelda character. Taking a page from other dedicated fans who hacked popular games to change the way they are played a young woman known only as Kenna W developed an altered version of the game’s program in which Zelda leads the adventures, SlashGear notes.

Kenna W, who says she has been playing The Legend of Zelda since she was “pretty young,” teamed with her boyfriend, a game developer, to identify necessary parts of the game’s code. She used an editing program to create new versions of some game characters and changed some of the basic plot.

The work took about three days. Kenna W found much of the programming support she needed on the Internet. She published her ROM patch[4], which updates the existing game code, on her Google (NASDAQ:GOOG[5]) Drive blog.

Other popular video games, including Donkey Kong have received similar alterations from fans in the past.

Last week, industry research firm NPD noted that sales of video console games and hardware fell 25% in February as download-able games continue to eat into physical game sales[6].
