Walmart Considers Having Customers Deliver Its Packages

Customers would receive discounts on WMT merchandise in return

Wal-Mart WMTMega-retailer Walmart (NYSE:WMT) is thinking about asking customers to provide delivery for online shoppers.

The new plan — which the company insists is still in early discussions — would ask Walmart customers to put themselves in the delivery system, Reuters reports.

Customers would volunteer to provide the delivery service to homes in their neighborhood. In return, the deliverers would receive a discount on their purchases. The company wouldn’t specify the size of the discounts but said it would pay for the deliverer’s gas costs for going out of their way.

It’s the next idea from the Bentonville-based retailer as it attempts to provide same-day delivery for online purchases. Walmart hopes to find a way to compete with online retailers such as Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) that have bitten into its sales over the last few years.

Earlier, Walmart began testing same-day delivery in stores in five markets. It is also using FedEx (NYSE:FDX) for delivery from its stores.
