Arkansas Oil Spill Cleanup Continues

No word on when Pegasus pipeline will be reopened

Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE:XOM)Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) continues to work to clean up the oil spill in Arkansas.

The spill from a 65-year-old pipeline outside of Mayflower, Ark., covered a residential subdivision with thousands of barrels of heavy oil, Reuters reports.

The company would not speculate when the spill would be cleaned up. The damaged section of the Pegasus pipeline has not yet been dug up and examined, and no close assessment has been performed. Entire yards have been soaked in the oil that runs down the streets, and more than 10 waterfowl were either killed or being treated.

The Pegasus pipeline carries oil from Illinois to Texas. The oil is heavy crude from Alberta, Canada, that has to be mixed with liquid natural gas or lighter oil to travel through the 90,000-barrel-per-day pipeline. It is unknown when the pipeline will be reopened.

Police are maintaining an evacuation of the area to protect the safety of residents, Reuters reports. Cleanup crews are working in full Hazmat gear while clearing away oil and oil-soaked items.
