Austin to Get WiFi Network From Time Warner

It follows Google's plan to bring gigabit service to the city

optical_fiber_630_flickrOn Wednesday, Time Warner Cable (NYSE:TWC) said that it will install hundreds of Wi-Fi hotspots across Austin, Texas.

Access to the Wi-Fi service will be free to Time Warner subscribers. Non-subscribers will be given prepaid access options as well as a free trial offer. Company officials said that Austin had been destined to receive free Wi-Fi hotspot service this year, but that Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) recent announcement that it would bring its gigabit Internet service to the city had accelerated their plans, the American-Statesman noted.

Earlier this month, Google named Austin as the second city to be wired with its Google Fiber service, which offers data transmission speeds reportedly 1,000 times faster than traditional cable and satellite Internet connections.

Time Warner will partner with some local businesses to install some of its new Wi-Fi hotspots. Other hotspots will be located in public parks and other heavily trafficked areas of the city.

Last week, Google announced that Provo, Utah, would become the third U.S. city to be wired with Google Fiber.

Shares of Time Warner Cable fell more than 1% in Thursday morning trading, while Google moved slightly higher.
