Carnival Cruise Ship Breaks Free

Triumph breaks loose in Alabama

carnivalLogoA ship from the beleaguered Carnival Cruise Lines (NYSE:CCL) broke loose from its dock yesterday.

The ship — the 900-foot-long Carnival Triumph — broke loose in Mobile, Ala., because of high winds, the Alabama Press-Register reports.

The U.S. Coast Guard is now inspecting the ship. Reports say the Triumph was visibly damaged when it slammed into buildings and other nearby vessels while loose.

Carnival confirmed that high winds were the cause of the incident. The company tweeted “Due to strong winds in Mobile, Carnival Triumph, which was docked @ Mobile shipyard, broke away from its moorings. US Coast Guard is on site.” The National Weather Service reports that winds gusts reached 66 mph yesterday in Mobile.

The Triumph was docked at Mobile for repairs. It was damaged earlier this year after an engine fire set it adrift for several days and stranded more than 4,000 passengers aboard.
