Leap Motion Announces Delay for 3D Controller Device

600,000 units have been produced, but haven't shipped yet

05-LeapMotion-LaptopComputer users who pre-ordered a device to control their machines through hand gestures won’t be getting the controller as soon as they thought.

Leap Motion says that its Leap Motion Controller won’t start shipping on May 13, as previously stated. The company says the device needs more testing and won’t ship until July 22. Leap’s CEO indicated that the company wanted to conduct a larger beta test to improve the device’s operating system, Digital Trends notes.

The Leap Motion Controller permits users to control video games, as well as drawing and 3D modeling software applications, through hand gestures. It effectively replaces keyboards and mice. More than 600,000 units have been manufactured.

Apps for the device are being created by 12,000 developers — all of whom already have a Leap Motion Controller of their own.

Leap Motion has partnered with Best Buy (NYSE:BBY) to launch the controller. It has also agreed to integrate its motion control technology into computer equipment made by Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ).
