McDonald’s Apologizes for Big Mac ‘Crisis’ Ad

Some thought it mocked people with mental health issues

mcdonalds store 630McDonald’s (NYSE:MCD) is backing away from an ad that ran in the Boston subway offering help for people who love Big Macs.

The ad showed a woman concealing her face with her hand. The ad’s tagline said “you’re not alone,” noting that “millions of people live the Big Mac,” and provided a telephone number for people experiencing the affliction. That telephone number connected to its corporate phone bank, the New York Times noted.

Not everyone thought the ad was funny. Some accused McDonald’s of mocking people who sought crisis counseling.

McDonald’s has released a statement saying that the ad did not receive corporate approval prior to its placement in the Boston subway system. The company said it has requested its removal and apologized to anyone offended by the ad.

In February, rival Burger King (NYSE:BKW) issued an apology after its Twitter account was seized by hackers, who posted obscene tweets for about an hour.

Shares of McDonald’s climbed more than 1% in Friday morning trading.
