Microsoft: Cheaper, Smaller Tablets Coming Soon

New devices available within months

SurfacePromoMicrosoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) announced that there will be a line of smaller Windows tablets on the market soon.

The new devices — which will be manufactured by its partners and feature Windows 8 — will be cheaper and bridge the gap between PCs and the Windows Phone, ZDNet reports.

The announcement came from Microsoft CFO Peter Klein in an earnings call April 18. During the call Klein mentioned that the newer devices would be available “in the coming months” and will be sold at a more attractive price point.

Last month Microsoft changed the Windows 8 certification guidelines to allow developers to create software for smaller, 7-inch tablet devices. This allows both manufacturers and software developers to create for the popular devices without having to get waivers from the company.

In the call, Klein also highlighted that the smaller devices could help the Windows Phone. While Klein maintained that the device was developing momentum in some regions, he also said that the company had, “a lot of work ahead to break through in some key markets.”
