Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) is overhauling the appearance of its social media website Google+.
The Internet search giant revealed that it plans to implement more than 40 major changes to Google+’s interface at its Google I/O conference this week. The company is also hoping to streamline user interaction with the website by adding a new way to stream content to mobile devices, Entrepreneur notes.
The new Google+ news stream will automatically adapt to whatever device it is viewed on, displaying content in the right size and amount of columns for the device’s screen. When viewed on the news stream, photos and videos will be adjusted to work with whatever device they appear on.
Google is also changed they way users can search for information or items by automatically assigning hashtags to items viewed by users. Those hashtags link to content associated with the items, which can be viewed by a user’s friends.
Additionally, the company is introducing a new photo-editing tool that makes it easier for users to quickly edit a image albums.
Finally, Google has developed and app for release on Android and Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS that permits users to send video, text and photos to friends. The app is dubbed Hangouts.
Aimed at competing with social media websites like Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), Google+ has about 190 million users. By contrast, Facebook has about 1 billion active users.
Shares of Google slipped almost 1% in Thursday morning trading.
