Authorities in three countries carried out coordinated sweeps

DiamondsEuropean authorities have arrested dozens of people they say were involved the brazen theft of diamonds from an airplane at Brussels Airport back in February.

On Wednesday, law enforcement agencies in three countries detained 31 people, including a suspected who is thought to be a member of the team that committed the robbery. The arrests began on Tuesday in France and Switzerland when 250 police officers searched 40 homes in the two countries, seizing seven people. On Wednesday, Belgian police arrested 24 more suspects, the Associated Press noted.

On February 18, thieves dressed in police-like clothing and armed with machine guns, cut a hole in the airport fence, drove a vehicle through the opening, boarded the plane and made off with $50 million in rough and polished diamonds that were scheduled to be delivered to Zurich.

Prosecutors were expected to announce later which of the detained people would actually face charges.

No one was harmed during the February robbery and passengers on the plane were not aware of the incident.
