Shhh! Amazon Is Working on a Secret 3D Smartphone

Users would not need glasses to see the effect

Sources tell the Wall Street Journal that Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) is developing two smartphones, including a high-end handset whose screen can render images that have a three-dimensional appearance. The screen can track users’ eye movements to render images that appear positioned above the screen, providing 3D perspectives without the need for special glasses.

While 3D imaging has been available on LCD screens for some time, most devices with the feature — like large screen TVs — require viewers to wear polarizing glasses to see the effect.

Rumors of an Amazon smartphone have been circulating since last year. The company moved into the mobile device market with its Kindle Fire tablets, aimed at challenging Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad and tablets running Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android OS.

Amazon is also said to be working on device that will stream music. The sources indicated that Amazon plans to begin unveiling its new gadgets this year, though that could be delayed due to technical issues.

Facebook’s (NASDAQ:FB) social media-oriented HTC First phone, which launched last month, was sharply discounted by AT&T (NYSE:T) this week.

Shares of Amazon rose fractionally in Friday morning trading.
