Billionaire News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch Files for Divorce

rupert murdochAfter more than a decade of marriage, media mogul Rupert Murdoch has filed for divorce.

On Thursday, attorneys for the News Corp. (NWSA) CEO filed paperwork with the New York State Supreme Court in preparation for a divorce action. Murdoch has been married to Wendy Deng, his third wife, since 1999. Unnamed sources say that the sealed document filed with the court indicates that the marriage “has broken down irretrievably,” CBS News notes.

Deng and Murdoch have two children. In 2011, Deng sprang to her husband’s defense during a hearing before the British parliament, striking a person attempting to toss a cream pie at Murdoch.

The billionaire met Deng, a former employee at News Corp.’s Hong Kong subsidiary, in 1997. Murdoch’s second wife received a $1.7 billion settlement after the couple split in 1999.

Murdoch exercises a controlling stake in News Corp. through a family trust. The company indicated that the divorce would not affect succession plans.

Later this month, News Corp. will split into two separate companies, separating its newspaper publishing and broadcast media units.

Shares of News Corp. fell fractionally in Friday morning trading.
