Urban Outfitters Pulls Product After Political Pressure

Urban Outfitters (URBN[1]), the hip fashion and furniture retailer, has stirred controversy again[2].

This time, it’s with the company’s new line of flasks, shot glasses and pint glasses. The beverage holders (as seen to the right) are designed to look like prescription drug bottles.

The company pulled the product line[3] after facing political pressure in multiple states.

“I wrote a letter to the Urban Outfitters CEO shortly after learning about this abominable product line, and I’m very pleased that the store has changed course,” Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear told the Associated Press[4]. “There’s nothing fashionable about prescription drug abuse, and selling teen-targeted items that glamorize prescription drugs is repulsive.”

The products take light of prescription drug abuse, which according to DrugFree.org[5], “is responsible for more deaths in the United States each year than heroin and cocaine combined.”

Urban Outfitters doesn’t appear remorseful about the products, despite pulling them from shelves.

“In this extensive range of product we recognize that from time to time there may be individual items that are misinterpreted by people who are not our customer,” Urban Outfitters says in a statement to Time[6].
