HPQ[1]Hewlett-Packard (HPQ[2]) is looking to move into the smartphone business again.

In a recent interview with The Indian Express, Yam Su Yin, a HP senior director of consumer devices, was asked whether Hewlett-Packard would be entering the smartphone business. She replied, “The answer is yes but I cannot give a timetable. It would be silly if we say no. HP has to be in the game.”

HP had a short run[3] in the smartphone business once before when it bought Palm in 2010. The product didn’t catch on though and HP left the market only a year later.

Moving into the smartphone market won’t be easy for HP, but it does have options.

HP already has devices[4] that run on Google’s (GOOG[5]) Android and Chrome OS which would make it a good platform for the company. The company could also try to revive its webOS, which its first batch of smartphones used. HP could also team up with Blackberry (BBRY[6]) in a deal that could help both companies out in the smartphone market.

HP will likely face a tough re-entry this late into the smartphone business.
