On Wednesday, the company announced that Intagram is adding a new tools that will permit the embedding of videos and photos on blogs and other websites outside of Facebook. Only content specifically designated as public can be embedded on external websites, Bloomberg notes.

Facebook paid a reported $1 billion[3] to acquire Instagram last year.

Stung by criticism over last year’s change to its terms of use, which would have allowed it to include user content in advertising without compensation[4], Facebook took pains to note that the new feature would preserve users’ ownership of their photos and videos. “Whether you want to embed your video on your blog or a friend wants to feature your photo on a website, everyone will clearly see that your content belongs to you,” Facebook told users in a statement[5].

Shares of Facebook dropped more than 1% in Thursday morning trading.
