For those who have a little extra (OK, a lot extra) to spend during their retirement — or for those who are curious about how the other half will live out their golden years — Forbes recently released a list of the best places to retire with wealth in the U.S.

The list is based on median household income and home prices, along with proximity to vibrant culture and medical facilities, scenic beauty and ambience.

Because the list is alphabetical with no No. 1, here are our favorite five from the list. (Read the full lists here.)[1]

#5: Rocky Mountain Living

Cherry Hills Village, Colorado[2]

A peaceful, outdoorsy area with a vibrant retirement community, Cherry Hills Village is most well known for its country club, which has hosted three U.S. Open golf tournaments.

#4: A Political Haven

Chevy Chase Village, Maryland[3]

Situated just on the outskirts of D.C., Chevy Chase Village is among the top 50 richest cities in the United States, according to the 2010 census. It’s average home price is at $1.3 million — and the beautiful area hosts many of the nation’s political insiders.

#3: The Island Getaway

Honolulu, Hawaii[4]

It’s the dream of many to retire somewhere warm, near the beach, with some exotic flavor but still retaining the comforts of home. Look no further than Honolulu, where the city hosts many exclusive neighborhoods and retirement communities (some 18% of its population are at retirement age).

#2: Resort in the Desert

Paradise Valley, Arizona[5]

The perfect mix of resorts, spas, golfing and a big cities just miles away. Purchase a home with a pool along one of its many golf courses. The health-conscience residents have culture and the arts at their fingertips, too. Plus a red rock daytrip beckons for when the grandkids come to visit.

#1: California Dreamin’

Montecito, California[6]

Close to Santa Barbara and the Pacific Ocean, this affluent hideaway has everything you need. Perfect climate, close proximity to the mountains and the coast, and hosts residents with discerning tastes to match yours. Oh, and Oprah lives there, too.
