James Cameron’s Avatar made headlines back in 2009 when it became the highest-grossing movie of all time, netting a $2.8 billion at the box office. Soon after the success of these movies, Cameron announced that he had plans to release two Avatar sequels.

According to BBC News, Cameron will now make three sequels after realizing that the Avatar story became bigger than he had anticipated. All three movies will be filmed in succession in 2014 and they will be released respectively in December of 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Two of these movies will have stand-alone storylines that will be part of a larger story in the fictional world of Pandora.

20th Century Fox (FOX[1]) has hired four screenwriters to assist Cameron in the creation of these new Avatar movies including the War of the Worlds and Armageddon writers. Additionally, Cameron said that all three films will feature the same visual virtuosity as the first one.
