Fonda, who plays Nancy Reagan in the movie, is infamous to many veterans of the Vietnam War due to her outspoken opposition to U.S. involvement in the conflict and a 1972 visit to North Vietnam during which she was photographed sitting on a an anti-aircraft gun.

A Vietnam and Korean War veteran, Boutwell described Fonda as a “treasonist person,” who supported the enemy. He called her casting as the patriotic Nancy Reagan a “slap in the face.”
