Dubbed the Galaxy Gear, the new smartwatch will feature a non-flexible display and is aimed at young trend-conscious consumers. Lee noted that Samsung has been working on the smartwatch concept for some time and that flexible displays might be included in future models.

Lee also noted that Samsung will reveal its Galaxy Note 3 phablet at the IFA show.

Reports that Samsung would show off the new smartwatch next week emerged earlier this month. The company has already filed patents relating to the new device.

Samsung isn’t the only company pursuing a smartwatch. Microsoft (MSFT) and Google (GOOG) are reportedly developing their own devices.

Apple (AAPL) is also rumored to be working on a smartwatch and has assembled a team of more than 100 designers and engineers for the project. But an Apple smartwatch isn’t expected to debut until next year.
