Taco Bell Expanding Waffle Taco Tests

The chain is looking to roll out a breakfast menu nationwide

taco bell -- waffle tacoBreakfast may not be what hungry consumers think of when they hear the name Taco Bell, but the chain is working to change that.

The fast food chain, owned by Yum! Brands (YUM), will increase the number of restaurants testing its new waffle taco, which features sausage and eggs, to about 100 locations in California, Tennessee and Nebraska on Thursday. Taco Bell says the expanded test will allow it to gauge the impact of the new item on restaurant operations, the Associated Press notes.

Since May, restaurants in Southern California have been testing the waffle taco, which apparently has been a hit with customers.

Taco Bell operates 6,000 restaurants nationwide. About 850 of those located in Western states offer a breakfast menu. The chain hopes to eventually expand its breakfast menu across the country.

In addition to the waffle taco, Taco Bell will also start testing a yogurt parfait and oatmeal at selected restaurants this week.

Shares of Yum! Brands fell about 1% in Tuesday morning trading.
