Time Warner Cable to Offer Free Tennis Coverage to Blackout Customers

Time_Warner_Cable[1]Time Warner Cable (TWC[2]) announced on Wednesday[3] that it will offer free coverage of the U.S. Open to blackout customers.

Time Warner will allow subscribers affected by the CBS (CBS[4]) blackout access to the Tennis Channel from Aug. 26 to Sept. 9 at no additional cost. Time Warner subscribers will be able to watch live matches of the U.S. Open tennis tournament and additional coverage of the event. This will give subscribers 240 hours of free tennis. Time Warner subscribers won’t be able to watch the men’s and women’s finals on the Tennis Channel, CBS has exclusive rights to those matches, reports Reuters.

This likely won’t stop many Time Warner customers, who have found unique ways[5] to get around the CBS blackout.

The blackout of CBS channels by Time Warner Cable has lasted 19 days[6], which surpasses the two-week shutdown of Fox by Cablevision Systems (CVC[7]) back in 2010.

CBS shares were up 3% as of Thursday morning, continuing a 37% year-to-date run.
