5 CEOs You Should Follow on Twitter

In what was certainly a coincidence, the CEO of Apple (AAPL) showed up on Twitter the same day that the company’s new line of iPhones showed up in stores.

Tim Cook joined the ranks of the other business leaders and celebrities on the soon-to-be publicly traded social media platform. And, yes, it’s really him — the little blue checkmark is proof. Cook’s first tweet was a positive reflection on the success of the iPhone:

Cook is hardly the first CEO to join the social media site, though. There’s a long list of executives on the platform, although not all of them post frequently enough to show up in your feed. Here are five of the most interesting and active CEOs on Twitter.

Jeff Weiner, LinkedIn

It’s probably not surprising that this social media CEO has a Twitter presence.

The LinkedIn (LNKD) chief frequently posts business-related content — much of it about LinkedIn — and who can blame him? If you’re an executive on social media and you’re not talking up your brand, you’re doing something wrong. There’s even a link to his LinkedIn profile, in case you want to add a CEO to your connections.

Even if you can’t use the CEO as a business connection, there’s still plenty you can learn about LinkedIn:

Mark Cuban, Dallas Mavericks (Owner)

Mark Cuban owns the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks as well as Landmark Theaters and film distributor Magnolia Pictures. He’s also one of the business “sharks” on the TV show Shark Tank.

Cuban is a sports enthusiast, so sports fans will get the most out of following him. He even wrote a book titled How to Win at the Sport of Business, showing just how much sports has influenced his business life.

Much of his Twitter activity is spent retweeting others, especially now that Shark Tank is back on the air. But every now and then, he slips in some business advice or sly commentary on the current business landscape:

Marissa Mayer, Yahoo

The glamorous CEO of Yahoo (YHOO) has a surprisingly active Twitter presence. Sadly, much of her time is spent dismissing rumors (sorry, curling fans, she’s never played).

But when she’s not calling out Huffington Post for false reporting, she tweets a lot about Yahoo’s new apps and services. She’ll even tweet behind-the-scenes images of things going on at Yahoo.

Oh, and if you’re lucky, she might even reply to your comment about Yahoo’s new logo:

Elon Musk, Tesla/SpaceX

Here’s one for the tech and engineering crowd.

Musk is the founder and CEO of SpaceX and the red-hot Tesla Motors (TSLA). Not surprisingly, much of his activity is spent talking about the latest developments from SpaceX and Tesla. There are lots of behind-the-scenes pictures and videos, and even a little bit of recruiting — Musk recently sent out a call for engineers to work on an autopilot system for Tesla’s Model S.

Unless you’re a Tesla shareholder, there’s not a lot of practical business talk, but it sure is an interesting glimpse into the near future:

Richard Branson, Virgin Group

Richard Branson is the founder of the Virgin Group of companies, including Virgin Media (VMED). He’s one of the richest people on earth, and an eccentric billionaire at that.

Branson’s tweets are heavy on philanthropy — everything from species conservation to helping educate young entrepreneurs. He tweets inspirational quotes every so often, so if you’re looking for some business encouragement, this is a great account to follow.

Oh, and he also tweets completely sound, usable business advice … like how to succeed as a startup:
