crashed car 630[1]The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released the results from a new safety test for mid-sized vehicles[2].

Both SUVs and cars for the 2013 and 2014 model years were tested by the institute. The tests focused on new systems meant to deter front-end collisions. The institute performs its safety tests for the insurance industry, which funds its research, the Associated Press notes.

The new test uses a rating system based on collision data collected by the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI).

Seven mid-sized vehicles received the institute’s highest rating in the tests. Vehicles that featured automatic braking and front-end collision warnings systems typically outscored vehicles lacking those systems.

Cars and SUVs from General Motors (GM[3]), Subaru and Volvo dominated the top scorers.

Here are the even vehicles that earned the institute’s “superior” rating[4] for front end crash prevention:

Earlier this year, GM’s Chevy Impala surprised many observers when it was rated the best sedan for 2014[5] by Consumer Reports.
