ExxonMobil to Offer Same-Sex Marriage Benefits to Workers

Marriage Benefits will be available to ExxonMobil's same-sex workers' spouses starting next year.

Exxon Mobil XOMExxonMobile (XOM) will offer marriage benefits to same-sex workers’ spouses starting next year.

The company will recognize all marriages that take place in countries and states where they are legal. ExxonMobil says that it has “made no change in the definition of eligibility for our US benefit plans,” and that it is only following the lead of the United States’ government. Exxon will extend healthcare benefits to spouses of its 77,000 workers and retirees on October 1. ExxonMobile already offers benefits to gay spouses in 30 other countries. The decision to offer benefits to same-sex couples comes during a same-sex discrimination lawsuit against the company, reports Upstream.

“This is a very positive step for the LGBT community and a vindication of years of efforts by shareholders and activists across the country,” Thomas DiNapoli, the comptroller of New York, who has been trying to get shareholders in ExxonMobil to take this step for four years, told the San Francisco Chronicle.
