KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA[1]If you use older surge protectors in your home or business, you may want to check the devices to see who made them[2].

A recall has been issued for 15 million surge protectors produced by Schneider Electric. The recall comes after 700 incidents of the surge protectors melting or overheating were reported to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the Associated Press notes.

At least 55 reports of damage resulting from fire and smoke linked to the surge protectors have also been received by the agency.

The surge protectors covered in the recall were manufactured prior to 2003 in the Philippines and China and sold at major U.S. retailers, including (BBY[3]), Circuit City and CompUSA between 1993 and 2002 for less than $50.

Consumers who own Schneider Electric surge protectors affected by the recall are urged to unplug the devices at once and contact the company for a replacement.

The CPSC says that 13 injuries have been linked to the defective surge protectors.
