Amazon Buys Online Math Course Company

The deal is expected to close by the end of the year


amazon box 630On Thursday, Amazon (AMZN) said that it had purchased a provider of mathematics programs for students.

In a statement, an executive in Amazon’s Kindle division noted that TenMarks range of educational products would help expand Amazon’s student focused content and services. Amazon did not reveal the terms of the purchase, but indicated that the deal would be completed before the end of this year.

Rohit Agarwal, TenMarks co-founder, predicted that the combination of Amazon and TenMarks would “create significant innovations in the K-12 arena.”

TenMarks has developed a variety of programs and resources to support the mathematics portion of the Common Core curriculum currently being implemented at schools across the country.

This week, Amazon emerged the winner in a court battle with IBM (IBM) over a disputed $600 million contract to build a private cloud for the CIA.

Shares of Amazon climbed more than 1% in Friday morning trading.
