Beer Sales Make a Comeback

Beer volume increase by 1.2% in 2012


beer mugsA report released by Technomic, a research firm in the food industry, on Tuesday, shows that beer saw an increase in both volume and dollar sales in the U.S. in 2012.

The report said that total beer volume increased by 1.2% in 2012, which drove retail beer sales up by 3.5%. This is good news when compared to 2011, when beer volume decreased by 1.3%. Doing especially well are craft beer, which saw sales increase by 14.4% in 2012. Craft beers now account for 6.3% of beers. Restaurants’ saw beer sales increase by 2.5% in 2012. Light beer remained the largest category in 2012, with Anheuser-Busch‘s (BUD) Bud Light seeing no change in volume, Bud Light Platinum putting an additional 20,000 cases on the market and Molson Coors Brewing’s (TAP) Coors Light seeing volume increase. The report claims that beer sales are still moving up in 2013, but at a slower pace, reports USA Today.

The market is also seeing more ciders being added by major brewing companies. Anheuser-Busch, MillerCoors and Boston Beer (SAM) all added ciders to the list of drinks they offer in 2012.
