sriracha sauce[1]A California city is suing Asian food maker Huy Fong Foods, demanding that the court halt production of a popular hot sauce, whose strong aroma is choking its residents[2].

Irwindale officials say that a sharp odor that emanates from the factory where Sriracha sauce is made is responsible for reports of eye and throat irritation and headaches experienced by people who live in the plant’s vicinity. The city’s attorney says that Irwindale tried to negotiate a solution with Huy Fong, but that the company has rejected allegations that the smell is causing any problems.

The city has requested that the court prevent further production of the hot sauce until the company develops a plan to contain the odor.

Sriracha sauce was created by a Vietnamese immigrant and has become popular in Asian food venues across the U.S.  Huy Fong began producing the sauce last year at 655,000-square-foot factory in Irwindale.
