Alex Calderwood, co-founder of the Ace Hotel chain, passed away on Thursday[1] at the age of 47.

Calderwood’s company, Atelier Ace, released a statement announcing his death, but the statement didn’t include any information regarding the cause of his death. He grew up in the Seattle area and started a barbershop with a rock theme with the help of two partners in 1993. After this, he opened a Seattle nightclub that became very popular. Calderwood then teamed up with two of his friends to launch the Ace Hotel chain in 1999. He is survived by his parents, two sisters and a brother, reports USA Today.

“Alex was an amazing connector,” Derschang, a restaurant and bar owner, told The Seattle Times[2]. “He knew people from so many different worlds. He loved introducing his different friends and supporting them in their endeavors. He was very generous in that way.”
