U.S. authorities discovered a massive drug tunnel[1] equipped with a rail system located near the U.S. border on Wednesday.

Authorities were able to shut down the tunnel, which was equipped with lighting and ventilations systems, before any drugs made it through undetected. The tunnel, which was about 35 feet underground and ran the length of six football fields, connected a warehouse in Tijuana, Mexico to one located San Diego, Calif. Authorities confiscated 8 1/2 tons of marijuana and 327 pounds of cocaine that were connected to the discovery of the tunnel. Three men, who worked as drivers, were charged with possession of marijuana and cocaine with intent to distribute on Thursday. The three men will face prison sentences ranging from 10 years to life, reports San Jose Mercury News.

U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy told CNN[2] that authorities have a message for drug cartels.

“If you continue to build and attempt to use these tunnels, we are determined to make this a big waste of your dirty money,” Duffy said. “Not only will we take your drugs and shut down your tunnels before you even get an opportunity to use them, but we’re now in a position where we’re going after your management.”
