Yahoo Sued for Scanning Users’ E-Mail

The lawsuit claims that Yahoo scanned emails to provide tailored ads

Yahoo (YHOO) is being sued for allegedly intercepting users’ e-mails.

The lawsuit, which was filed in federal court in San Jose, Calif., on Nov. 15, claims that the company intercepted e-mails and used personal information to profit from advertising. The plaintiff is seeking $5,000 for each person who claims that their privacy was invaded. The lawsuit is using Yahoo’s policies, which state that the company scans all incoming and outgoing messages to bring targeted ads to users, to back up its claims. The lawsuit, which is also seeking the status of a class-action suit, also claims that Yahoo makes 75% of its income from ads, reports Bloomberg.

Google (GOOG) has also recently been involved in a lawsuit over scanning peoples’ emails. The lawsuit, which was filed by Consumer Watchdog, claimed that people don’t expect their private accounts to be scanned.
