Zynga Can Keep ‘Scramble,’ but Must Change Logo

Mattel plans to appeal the ruling

zynga scramble app 630Zynga (ZNGA) can keep the word “scramble” in its Scramble with Friends game, but it must change the game’s logo.

The decision that Zynga must change the logo for its Scramble with Friends game comes from a High Court judge. The judge made the ruling during a case where Mattel (MAT) claimed that Zynga’s use of the word “scramble” was copyright infringement. The judge ruled that Zynga was still allowed to use the word scramble in the name of its game, but that it had to change the game’s logo because it was to similar to the  Scrabble’s. Zynga will have to change the curly “M” that it uses for the game’s logo because it “has the propensity to confuse.” Mattel was happy with the judge’s decision, but it also plans to further appeal the ruling, reports Zee News.

Zynga won the copyright infringement case due to its argument that Mattel’s copyright on Scrabble was too vague and that it prohibits the use of ivory tiles with any combination of numbers or letters.
