Here are the requirements for cars to make it on IIHS’ safest cars list.

TOP SAFETY PICK requires good performance in the Institute’s moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests and, for the first time, good or acceptable performance in the small overlap front test introduced in 2012. The same level of performance in those tests, along with at least a basic rating for front crash prevention, is required for the higher accolade, TOP SAFETY PICK+.

Honda Motors (HMC) topped the list when eight of its vehicles were rated as the safest.

Here are the best SUVs that made the Top Safety Pick+ list.

  • Mazda CX-5
  • Mitsubishi Outlander
  • Subaru Forester
  • Toyota Motors’ (TM) Highlander
  • Acura MDX
  • Mercedes-Benz M-Class
  • Volvo’s (VOLVY) XC60

Here are the best SUVs that made the Top Safety Pick list.

  • Acura TL
  • Mitsubushi Outlander Sport
  • Volvo XC90

Several small cars and minivans also made it on IIHS’ list of the safest cars for 2014.
