Global color authority Pantone has declared its 18-3224 Radiant Orchid the color of the year for 2014.

Executive director of the Pantone Color Institute said that the color is an “invitation to innovation” that “encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today’s society.” She added that the Radiant Orchid has undertones of pink, purple and fuchsia that “inspires confidence” and has a “beguiling charm.” Pantone encourages people to use the color for fashion, beauty and interiors in 2014 to celebrate the purple hue of creativity.

Previous color of the year winners include Emerald (2013), Tangerine Tango (2012) and Honeysuckle (2011).
