Holy Snakes! 400 Pythons Found in Teacher’s Home

He was arrested for suspicion of animal cruelty

scrub pythonLaw enforcement officials got a nasty surprise when they visited a Santa Ana, Calif., home on Wednesday.

Police were summoned by residents who reported an intensely foul odor coming from the home of an elementary school teacher. The smell was so bad, some of the man’s neighbors thought someone might be dead inside the home, the Los Angeles Times notes.

They were partially right. No dead people were found inside, but hundreds of pythons were. The five-bedroom home was filled pythons — 404 pythons in all. The snakes were found all over the home.

The home owner was reportedly a snake breeder. His mother passed away in 2011.

Police say that more than half of the pythons — mostly ball pythons — were dead in their cages. After finding evidence that the home owner had failed to provide water or food to some of the pythons, police arrested him on suspicion of animal cruelty.
