A weekend diversion went horribly awry for a newlywed woman, who fell to her death during a BASE jump at a Utah park[1].

The woman and her new husband made BASE jumps — in which climbers jump from high elevations using parachutes to brake their descents — from Zion National Park’s 7,276-foot Mount Kinesava. The 28-year-old newlywed fell about 2,000 after her parachute failed to properly deploy, CNN notes.

The newlywed woman’s 29-year-old husband jumped after her, but could not save her. He hiked out of the area and alerted park authorities, who located the newlywed woman’s body the next day.

According to reports, the newlywed couple had experience in BASE jumping. The woman becomes the first person to die during a BASE jump at the park.

BASE jumping is prohibited in Zion National Park.
