Génesis Carmona, who was named Miss Tourism Carabodo last year, was shot during anti-government demonstrations in the northern Venezuelan state of  Carabodo on Wednesday. The Venezuela beauty queen was one of several people injured when gunmen approached the protestors on motorcycles and opened fire. Last month, another Venezuela beauty queen, Monica Spear, a one-time Miss Venezuela, was murdered by robbers on a highway in Carabodo, the Associated Press notes.

Venezuelan Violence Observatory claims that 24,763 people were killed in the country last year, giving Venezuela one of the highest murder rates in the world. Venezuela is home to about 30 million people.

A series of demonstrations against socialist government of President Nicolás Maduro has shaken Venezuela this week. Protestors are angry at soaring inflation, lingering poverty and escalating crime rates in the country. Maduro was elected last year to succeed the late Hugo Chavez, whose socialist economic policies and anti-American antagonism worsened relations between the U.S. and oil-rich Venezuela over the last decade.

The Venezuelan economy has suffered under the strain of perennial corruption and numerous devaluations of its currency[4] during Chavez’s time as president.
