Apple Working on More Racially Diverse Emojis

It must work with a consortium that sets emoji standards


AppleLogoThe little emotion-expressive facial icons — called emojis —that people add to messages sent from Apple (AAPL) devices may soon get a little more diverse.

Currently available emojis show mostly Caucasian-appearing faces. The lack of diversity in Apple’s emojis was noticed by Viacom‘s (VIAB) MTV, which asked Apple about it, CNET notes.

Apple indicated that its available emojis “are based on the Unicode standard,” which allows them to be visible across multiple platforms. The iPhone-maker conceded that “there needs to be more diversity in the emoji character set” and indicated that AAPL is working to add a more diverse range of characters.

However, AAPL cannot add new emoji characters on its. It must collaborate with the Unicode Consortium to update the available set of icons.

AAPL stock was flat in Friday mid-day trading. AAPL stock has gained more than 20% over the past year.
