On Thursday, Pfizer (PFE) announced a recall of some lots of both its brand name antidepressant and a generic version.
The recall was prompted by the discovery of a capsule containing another drug in a bottle of Effexor by a pharmacist. Pfizer has issued a voluntary recall for two lots of Effexor bottles and one lot of the generic version of the drug, which were packaged in the same place. Pfizer says that no other reports of capsule mix-ups have been reported, Reuters notes.
More than 100,000 bottles of Effexor and its generic version are affected by the recall. More than 65,500 bottles had been sent to pharmacies in the U.S. prior to the announcement of the recall.
A capsule containing cardiac medication Tikosyn was found in the Effexor bottle. A patient who was not prescribed Tikosyn who inadvertently took the drug could suffer a serious and potentially fatal reaction, depending on their medical condition.
Pfizer stock slipped slightly in Friday mid-day trading. PFE stock has gained more than 14% over the past year.
