Winklevoss Twins Book Space Trip With Bitcoin

The join a long list of celebrities hoping to ride into space

The Winklevoss twins — Cameron and Tyler — could be on schedule to make space travel history.

The prominent bitcoin investors have booked a flight on Virgin Galactic’s low-earth orbital SpaceShipTwo craft. They are the 700th and 701st persons to buy tickets for the space ride, which costs $250,000 per seat. Naturally, the Winklevoss twins paid for their space trip booking with bitcoins, NBCNews notes.

Assuming the Winklevoss twins ride into low-earth orbit on the same flight, they would become the first twins to be in space simultaneously. NASA astronauts Mark and Scott Kelly — also twin brothers — have both been in space, but never together.

The Winklevoss twins join a growing list of celebrities who have signed up to be passengers on SpaceShipTwo, if and when it ever takes off. Other prominent space travelers scheduled to ride the Virgin Galactic craft into low-earth orbit include Justin Bieber, Brad Pitt, Lady Gaga and physicist Stephen Hawking.

In a blog post, one of the Winklevoss twins wrote that they view the Virgin Galactic tickets “as as seed capital supporting a new technology that may forever change the way we travel.”

The Winklevoss twins have become heavily invested in bitcoin and last year announced plans to establish their own bitcoin fund.
